WOW'ed by Grade 6

Sixth grade hit the ground running, proving that they have been busy this summer with their reading and creativity! They started off the year presenting their summer reading projects. Here are a few snapshots from some notable presentations.

Zayda's carnival-themed balloon game was a hit (or bullseye!) for students who answered trivia questions correctly from her WOW book, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

Sean tries his aim at The Alchemist trivia.

Sophia treated everyone to sugar pies from her WOW book, The True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp
by Kathi Appelt.

Andrew's diorama of a critical scene from The Hardy Boys: The Tower Treasure.

Tom thoroughly enjoyed his summer read, Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury.

 How to Survive Middle School

For their first writing assignment, sixth graders were tasked with composing letters of advice to the incoming fifth graders. They shared some perks of middle school life and tips for success with Grade 5. Below are some of Mrs. DeLuca's favorites:

PERKS

"There are many cool things and advantages of being upstairs: intramural volleyball, College Settlement, field day..." - Zayda

"You get bigger lockers and you get to run for student council." - Andrew

"You get to look SNAZZAE in a blazer." - Tom

"There are lots of good things about middle school. You are more independent. You have green and white days. You have your Chromebooks and you get to do more work technology-wise." - Garrett

TIPS

"Make new friends! If you see someone lonely, go talk to them."
"Be responsible. There are privileges and you need to use them carefully."

   -Sophia

"There is [A LOT] of homework, so budget your time well." - Tom

"Practice if you have a mass because your friends/siblings will never leave you alone if you make a mistake." - Grant

"Keep all your notes and study guides in a folder or accordian folder so you have easy access to study." - Molly

"Do not skip homework or behave badly and disrespectfully. If you do, there are warnings, which means detentions... If you avoid these things and work hard, your record will be fine which [could] lead possibly to a scholarship when it's time to look at high schools." - Sean

Stay tuned for more exciting updates from 6th Grade E.L.A.!

A Special Visitor

The fifth graders enjoyed a visit today from Lt. Lanni, who brought with him a surprise guest speaker, Brent Celek. The former Eagles tight end shared stories of his experiences in school, and the challenges he overcame as a student and athlete to get where he is today. His advice for our students? Respect others, work hard, and dream big. A big THANK YOU to Lt. Lanni for this exciting surprise! Mr. Celek's visit coincided perfectly with a STEAM lesson today, called "Passion to Purpose," where the class had to work together to identify a way to apply their passions in a way that would inspire real change. Their ideas are displayed in the slides below; they hope to expand on this project as they continue their work in the lab. There is no school tomorrow or Monday, Feb. 17. Tuesday will be a Day 1, which means that fifth graders will need to wear their gym uniforms to school. Thank you, and Happy Valentine's Day!

So Much to Be Thankful For

Fifth graders show off their placemats! This week has largely focused on preparing to celebrate Thanksgiving. Fourth and fifth graders came together to make Thanksgiving placemats for the families in need who will receive the gift baskets. Over the past few weeks, fifth graders have also led the entire school in our afternoon prayer at dismissal. Izzy leading us in prayer. Joslyn leading us in prayer. Raheem leading us in prayer. Lauren leading us in prayer. On Thursday, Lt. Lanni visited our class and shared his experiences from his time on the S.W.A.T. team. The students learned about the Baker Bat Shield and were even able to try on a bulletproof vest! Wishing all of our families a restful, enjoyable Thanksgiving season!

The Week in Review: Feb. 3-7

What a week we had in middle school! From health education to outstanding performances by our students, it was full of excitement. First, the entire class would like to give a big THANK YOU  to our hardworking parents and family members who were able to join us for Grandparent's Day and Parent Visitation. It meant so much to them to have you visit them at school and take part in their daily routines. We know that your time is valuable, and it is so appreciated that you chose to spend it with us these past two mornings! On Wednesday, fourth through sixth graders visited Lankenau Medical Center for health education classes. Fourth and fifth graders learned about the importance of "Safety First," where they reviewed the best choices to make to lead a safe life. They went over everything from how to correctly wear a bicycle helmet to administering the Heimlich maneuver on others in crisis. As always, it was a lively lesson full of demonstrations and hands-on learning.
