Getting Ready for "College"

Fifth graders have been practicing their multiplication and geography skills in class this week. They also took their first Reading test on Friday. To prepare, they practiced on Kahoot! Sixth graders have begun their first novel,  The Lightning Thief.  This modern take on Greek mythology has seemed to capture many of their interests; in the coming weeks, they will be writing their own myths as part of their narrative fiction writing unit. Finally, the fifth and sixth graders have been working together to prepare for next week's trip to College Settlement! They have spent several class periods getting to know each other through ice breaker activities and team building exercises. Teamwork and collaborative experiences are a large part of our trip - the students seem ready to accept that challenge and take on the outdoors! Please see the slideshow below for all of the important details about our trip. Make sure to subscribe to Mrs. DeLuca and Mr. Hartsoc

Spending Time with Families

This Tuesday, our HCA students met their new family members and spent the morning getting to know each other and creating "About Me" banners to display in our cafeteria. They look forward to a year full of memories together!

Spreading the Love

We've survived two weeks of school! Fifth graders made prayer cards this week for special intentions. Giving Their Brains a Break It's been a busy week in Grade 5 as we began to dive deeper into the curriculum. The class worked especially hard in Spelling and Math to prepare for their quizzes on Friday. Sometimes breaks are needed, though; the class always enjoys a GoNoodle "brain break." Here they are melting away any worries or tension in between classes.  Middle School Bowling

Friday Treats and Greek Mythology!

UPDATED FRIDAY, SEPT. 20: Sixth graders enjoy "coffee" (hot chocolate) and donuts during Friday's LA period for all scoring 100% or higher on their first Vocabulary quiz. We practiced nouns on Kahoot while enjoying breakfast. What a way to end the week!

AND THE NEW GRADE 5 REPRESENTATIVES ARE...

Joslyn Ho  and  Daniel Lanni!            These students have been elected to serve as our fifth grade representatives on student council. As members, they will be the "voice" of our class, attending monthly meetings and helping to coordinate special events for the middle school to take part in throughout the year. We wish them the best as they begin their roles as public servants and positive role models of our school.  Congratulations to all of our candidates, who worked hard on their campaigns and will continue to play an integral role in our school community.

Life in Middle School: Welcome, Grade 5!

Our new middle schoolers are already working hard in fifth grade. They began last week by presenting their summer reading projects. Students enjoyed chocolate cake, deciphering hidden messages, watching video games, learning a recipe for how to survive a monster apocalypse, and so much more -- all while learning more about their classmates' favorite books from the summer! Joslyn shows off a secret codex vitae from her WOW report on Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. Lauren presents her book review on Maniac Magee to the class. --------------------------------------------------- For their first writing assignment, fifth graders planned out their academic and personal S.M.A.R.T. goals that they hope to accomplish at some point during their first year of middle school.                          Click on each photo below to see their goals up close!
