Wrapping Up the Year in Fifth Grade

With the school year coming to a close, it's the perfect time to look back on a few events that have taken place over the past few months in fifth grade. Earth Day 2019 To celebrate Earth Day, fifth and sixth graders made artwork out of recycled materials during Community Time. Students painted garden rocks and created seedling paper earths. Grant painting his rockmoji. Mrs. Mueller explaining how to make recycled paper to the students. Creating paper pulp out of wet, recycled newspaper. Adding blue and green elements to the paper pulp from recycled construction paper. Sophia demonstrating the straining process in making recycled paper. Charlotte and Zayda finish up their earths, ready to add their seedlings! Garrett, Andrew, and Molly show off their finished work. Transition Talk At the start of May, the fifth grade hosted a Transition Talk with the fourth grade students to share their experiences as first-year mi

A Musical Sendoff in Sixth Grade

Today was the sixth grade's final visit to Sonshine Academy for the year. The students wanted to make their last trip a special one, so they put on a performance that included live music, magic tricks, and even a puppet show! The children had a wonderful time watching their HCA friends perform for them and the teachers continuously remarked at how impressed they were by our students. The sixth graders really seemed to enjoy their service project this year. While they were sad for their visits to come to an end, they look forward to the opportunities that await them in seventh grade! Below are some photos from today, with several videos of their performances. Sixth graders all smiles for their last service trip to Sonshine Academy. A Look at the Class Sleepover

Here are some snapshots from the class sleepover on Friday/Saturday that were shared by Mrs. Zwilling. From the looks of it, the class had a great time! Playing basketball with Dr. Kellich. Fifth graders enjoying the playground all to themselves on Friday evening.  Enjoying snacks and ice cream sundaes in the teacher's lounge! First movie of the evening in the fifth grade classroom. Midnight basketball: Still going strong! It was a sleepy Saturday morning for most students!  The class even put the room back in order for Monday!

Hard Work Pays Off!

Fifth graders model their new class t-shirts, made by Sophia and family, for the CLASS SLEEPOVER! If the past week had a theme, it would easily be, "hard work pays off." The class spent all week studying for and taking tests in Reading (we have just finished our latest novel,  Number the Stars ), Social Studies, Religion, and Spelling. They worked incredibly hard on each exam and clearly took the time to study and prepare. This week in Writing, we worked on perfecting the components of a strong, information-based paragraph to eventually write multi-paragraph essays. Students practiced referencing skills as they used in-text citations to state details supporting the topic of why recess is an essential part of the school day for students. On Tuesday, as part of our Social Studies test review, fifth graders were tasked with writing a letter to someone in government asking them to invest tax funds into renewable or nonrenewable energy sources.
